Same issuer, native on both
Circle issues USDC natively on Ethereum and natively on Base. Neither is a wrapped or bridged copy of the other. That means the token you hold on each is the canonical version for that chain, with the issuer standing behind it directly.
So the choice between them is not about which USDC is real. Both are. The choice is about which network you want that USDC to live and move on, because the network is where the practical differences show up.
Separate deposits on separate networks
Even though it is the same asset from the same issuer, USDC on Base and USDC on Ethereum are two distinct balances. USDC on Base only spends on Base. USDC on Ethereum only spends on Ethereum. Your wallet shows each only when that network is selected.
Base is an Ethereum Layer-2, so both use ETH for gas and share the same address format. That similarity is convenient and also a trap. Because the address looks identical, it is easy to send to the right address on the wrong network. Always confirm the network, since the matching address will not catch the mistake for you.
The practical trade-offs

- Acceptance: some services and larger settlements expect mainnet USDC specifically.

- Onward moves: where the USDC needs to go next often decides which network to hold it on now.
Which to hold, and moving between them
For frequent, smaller transfers where you control both sides, Base usually wins on cost. For interacting with a service that expects mainnet, or for large settlement where you want to sit on the base layer, Ethereum USDC is the fit. If you regularly do both, holding some on each network saves you moving funds back and forth.
When your USDC is on the wrong side for what you need, moving it is a cross-chain swap between the two networks, not a plain send. Confirm the destination network before you commit, since the shared address format will not stop a wrong-network mistake. Comparing routes by net received shows the small cost of the move up front.
