Network choice is the biggest lever
The same swap can cost wildly different amounts depending on where it settles. A stablecoin move on Ethereum mainnet at a busy hour can cost many times the same move on a low-fee network. If your destination supports a cheaper network, receiving there is often the single largest saving available, and it dwarfs the other levers combined.
This only works when the receiving side accepts that network. The destination defines what is valid, so match the network to where the funds are going next. Sending to a cheaper network the receiver cannot credit is not a saving, it is a stranded transfer.
Same-chain or cross-chain changes the math
A same-chain swap pays gas once. A cross-chain swap involves two networks and can carry cost on both legs. That does not make cross-chain expensive by default, but it does mean the network you end on matters as much as the one you start on. If you need value on a specific chain, factor the destination's fees into the decision rather than only the source's.
Sometimes the cheapest overall path is to swap into a stablecoin on a low-fee network and hold it there until you need it, rather than crossing chains repeatedly. The right choice depends on where the funds ultimately need to be.
The other levers stack up
Once the network question is settled, smaller savings add together.
- Timing: gas rises and falls with demand, so a less congested moment costs less. This matters most on busy mainnets and barely at all on low-fee networks.
- Aggregation: comparing engines by net output finds the cheapest route for your exact pair and size instead of guessing.
- Fewer hops: a direct route usually beats one that bounces through extra tokens, since each hop can add fees and impact.
- Order size: splitting a very large order on a thin pair reduces price impact, though on liquid pairs at normal sizes this makes little difference.
When cheapest is not the right goal
Cheapest sometimes trades off against speed and acceptance, and it is worth naming that honestly. A slower or more roundabout route might quote a slightly better net figure while taking longer to settle or ending on a network your receiver does not support. If you need funds fast, or on a specific chain a counterparty requires, the marginally cheaper route can be the wrong one.
The useful habit is to optimize for cheapest within your real constraints. Decide the speed and destination you actually need first, then find the cheapest route that meets them, rather than chasing the lowest number in isolation.
